What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a procedure performed by a chiropractor to correct misalignments in the spine. The goal of the adjustment is to improve spinal motion and the body’s physical function. By correcting these misalignments, chiropractic adjustment aims to ease pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall health.

These adjustments are commonly used to treat conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Chiropractic care is considered a safe and effective treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal issues, but only if performed by a skilled and licensed practitioner.

Our primary service is chiropractic care. While our practitioner has extensive knowledge in areas like spinal decompression, mental wellness, muscle work, and functional medicine, these are not standalone services in individual appointments. Instead, our practitioner integrates these aspects into chiropractic care for each appointment as needed. This holistic approach provides each patient with treatment for their specific needs, maximizing the results.

What Does A Chiropractic Adjustment Do

This procedure can help ease pain, reduce inflammation, and improve overall mobility. By realigning the spine, chiropractic care aims to restore proper nerve function, which can positively impact various bodily systems. This treatment is commonly used to address issues like back pain, neck pain, and headaches, and it can also improve posture and overall physical performance. Chiropractor adjustment can help the body heal naturally by reducing pressure on the nervous system and promoting better communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Chiropractic Adjustment Techniques

Here are some common chiropractic treatment techniques:

  • Diversified Technique. Involves hands-on thrusts to correct spinal misalignments.
  • Gonstead Technique. Focuses on detailed analysis and precise chiropractic adjustments, often using specific tables or chairs.
  • Activator Method. Uses a handheld instrument to deliver a gentle, controlled force to the spine.
  • Thompson Drop Table Technique. Uses a specialized table with drop sections to improve the force of the adjustment.
  • Flexion-Distraction Technique. Involves a special table that gently stretches the spine, often used for herniated discs.
  • Toggle Recoil Technique. A quick, light thrust, typically applied to the upper spine or neck.
Cox Technique. A gentle, non-force adjusting approach, often used for lower back pain and sciatica.
  • Spinal Decompression. A non-surgical therapy designed to relieve pressure on the spinal discs and nerves by gently stretching the spine.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Tim’s for a few years now. Although my visits are primarily maintenance now, he’s always great at treating flare-ups of other, more acute issues—and he does so with an incredibly calm and kind demeanor.

I seriously cannot emphasize just how much of a difference that Chiropractor Tim Williams’ has made in my life for the better. Now I have been to my fair share of chiropractors over the last 15 years, since my accident. And without a doubt, Tim is, hands down, the BEST chiropractor I’ve had the blessing of finding. His approach is gentle, professional & precise 👌🏽. And his knowledge of the workings of the physical body is so VAST, it almost seems limitless. He thinks “outside the box” and has the most soothing bedside manner, which matches his extremely soothing voice (that is so relaxing, I liken his vocal range to the voices one would hear in guided meditation apps 😆). But my path to Tim started when I arrived in his care in dire straits (I’m talking- SO twisted up in pain with a very LOW degree of musculoskeletal flexibility 🥺). And after my first visit with him, I left his care, with two types of tears… tears of shame from realizing just how long I allowed my pain to take control over my life, but most importantly, I had tears of joy from the relief I felt & in knowing that the relief from pain was (& still is) only going to keep getting better with each visit with Tim. Now I know this is going to sound strange, but right after each adjustment that I receive from Tim, I experience this crazy physiological phenomena where it feels as if my “eyeballs are breathing” 😆! As strange as that sounds, I attribute this experience to the fact that the repairs that Tim is making within my body, from a chiropractic standpoint, are truly working & helping to connect & align all my bodily systems, back to a more flourishing state that which God created me to be in. With the goal of bringing me back to, or as close to, a state of homeostasis. I really can’t thank Tim Williams enough for what he does for me in my life. And this next sentence is aimed specifically to the person who is reading these reviews and trying to find and decide on which chiropractor to go with: If your on the fence in trying to pick a chiropractor in Portland, OR, I not only HIGHLY recommend Tim Williams, but coming from someone who, prior to landing in Tim’s office, was living a MISERABLE life in pain, I actually plead with you to give Tim Williams a chance! Because I don’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to at least explore the possibility of finding some relief from pain through Tim’s phenomenal chiropractic skills! And another thing to relay to you who is reading my review and has made it this far into it (😉), a common misconception of chiropractic care is that you go into see a chiropractor AFTER you’ve been injured.. but that’s the misconception! But from what I’ve learned is that you don’t have to (and maybe you don’t want to) actually wait to be in pain before receiving chiropractic care! But in fact, to gift your body with a better shot at withstanding future, physical offenses, it’s in one’s best interests to start chiropractic care now! Sure wish I knew this fact before my accident 🙈…. But this also means that it’s never too late to get in to see Tim Williams to either get relief from pain.. or to continue your physical wellness journey.

Dr. Tim is hands down the best chiropractor in the Portland metro area. I honestly can’t say enough about what a great doctor he is. He is friendly, caring and really knows his stuff! Most importantly he takes the time to really listen to you and find the root of the problem. I went in for some unresolved neck pain and he was the first doctor that was actually able to help!

Frequently asked questions about Chiropractic Adjustment in Portland, OR

What happens before a chiropractic adjustment?

Before a chiro adjustment, the chiropractor conducts an evaluation to understand your health history and specific concerns. This process typically includes discussing any symptoms you’re experiencing, past medical history, and lifestyle factors. The chiropractor may perform a physical examination, focusing on your spine and posture, and might use diagnostic tools like X-rays to get a clear picture of your spine’s alignment. This helps the chiropractor identify problem areas and develop a treatment plan.

What happens during a chiropractic adjustment?

During an adjustment, the chiropractor uses their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, quick force to a specific spinal joint. You might hear a popping or cracking sound, which is the release of gas bubbles from the joint. This procedure aims to improve spinal alignment, improve mobility, and ease pain. The chiropractor may have you lie on a specialized table to position your body correctly for the adjustment. The entire process is generally quick and typically painless, providing immediate relief for many patients. Though it may vary depending on every unique case.

What happens after a chiropractic adjustment?

After a chiropractic adjustment procedure, you may feel immediate relief, increased mobility, or a sense of well-being. Some people experience mild soreness or stiffness, similar to post-exercise discomfort, which typically resolves within a day. It’s important to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Your chiropractor might provide specific aftercare instructions, including stretches or exercises. Regular follow-up visits may be recommended to maintain spinal health and address any ongoing issues.

Are there any side effects of chiropractic care?

Chiropractor spinal adjustment is generally safe, but some people may experience side effects, such as:

  1. Mild Soreness. Temporary soreness or discomfort in the treated area.
  2. Headaches. Mild headaches following an adjustment.
  3. Fatigue. Feeling unusually tired or fatigued after the treatment.
  4. Dizziness. Lightheadedness or dizziness immediately after the adjustment.
  5. Local Pain. Increased pain or discomfort at the adjustment site.
  6. Stiffness. Temporary stiffness in the muscles or joints.
  7. Numbness or Tingling. Rarely, numbness or tingling in the limbs.

These side effects are usually mild and short-lived, resolving within a few hours to a couple of days. It’s important to discuss any concerns with your chiropractor before starting treatment to guarantee the best possible outcome.
