What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a hands-on technique used to manipulate the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues of the body. It’s about applying pressure, tension, motion, or vibration to the soft tissues using various methods and instruments. This therapy aims to enhance physical function, promote relaxation, and improve circulation. Practitioners use their hands, fingers, elbows, and sometimes tools to perform the massage, so it meets the unique needs of each individual.

Massage therapy works by improving blood flow, reducing muscle tension, and stimulating the nervous system, which helps the body heal itself and maintain its good health. With the help of a massage therapist, it can be used to address a huge variety of specific issues like muscle pain, or as a general health practice. Massage therapy may be performed by a variety of specialists in different settings, including Portland chiropractic practices, massage therapy clinics, etc.

Our main service is chiropractic care. Although our practitioner has extensive expertise in areas such as spinal decompression, mental wellness, muscle work, and functional medicine, these are not offered as separate services during appointments. Instead, these elements are incorporated into our chiropractic sessions as necessary. This comprehensive approach ensures each patient receives treatment that addresses their specific needs.

Types of Massage Therapy

There are many types of therapy massage, each designed to address different needs and issues. Understanding the types is important to select the most suitable treatment for your specific requirements. Our massage work is targeted and only done if we feel it is necessary for our main treatment. If a person wishes to get a full massage, they can access all these types through the massage therapists we work with. For maximum benefits, massage therapy may be used in conjunction with functional medicine techniques and approaches. Understanding the different techniques and their intended benefits can help you make an informed decision and achieve the best results from your massage therapy sessions. This ensures full clarity on what we provide versus what a potential client can access through our network.

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that targets the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. This type of physical therapy massage uses slower, more forceful strokes to penetrate deep muscle layers and fascia, helping to ease chronic muscle tension and pain. It is particularly effective for treating stiff necks, lower back tightness, and sore shoulders. Unlike Swedish massage, which focuses on relaxation, deep tissue massage aims to break down scar tissue and adhesions that can disrupt circulation and cause pain and inflammation. This method is often used by a professional massage therapist for individuals with chronic pain, athletes, and those recovering from injuries. The licensed massage therapist may use their fingers, thumbs, and elbows to apply deep pressure.

Sports massage is a specialized type of massage designed to support athletes and physically active individuals. It focuses on preventing and treating injuries, improving performance, and reducing recovery time. This massage technique combines various methods, including deep tissue massage, stretching, and joint mobilization, all crafted to fit the athlete’s specific needs and the demands of their sport. Sports massage can be performed before, during, or after physical activity to prepare the muscles, reduce fatigue, and improve flexibility. It helps ease muscle tension, improve blood flow, and reduce the risk of injury by addressing muscle imbalances and tightness. This type of massage is highly useful for athletes at all levels, from amateurs to professionals.

Trigger point massage is a technique focused on identifying and releasing specific trigger points, which are tight areas within muscle tissue that cause pain in other parts of the body. These points, also called muscle knots, can lead to referred pain and discomfort. During a trigger point massage, the certified massage therapist applies focused pressure to these knots, using fingers, knuckles, or elbows. This pressure is held for a few seconds and then released, helping to ease muscle tension and improve circulation. Trigger point massage is useful for treating chronic pain conditions, muscle stiffness, and injuries, providing relief and better muscle function. It is suitable for those experiencing localized pain and muscle tightness.

Myofascial release is a type of massage therapy aimed at easing tension and pain in the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs. This technique involves a massage therapist applying gentle, sustained pressure to the fascia to release restrictions and improve movement. The local massage therapist uses their hands to stretch and massage the fascia, helping to reduce pain and improve flexibility. Myofascial release is effective for treating chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia, and for recovering from injuries. It can be used by a massage therapist in Portland Oregon to address specific areas of discomfort or as a whole-body treatment

Lymphatic massage, or a lymphatic drainage massage, is a gentle technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system. This type of massage uses light, rhythmic strokes and gentle pressure to encourage the movement of lymph, which helps remove toxins and waste from the body. It is used to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. A Chiropractic massage therapist uses lymphatic massage to treat lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, and chronic conditions that cause inflammation. The gentle nature of this massage makes it suitable for individuals with sensitive or compromised lymphatic systems.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Tim’s for a few years now. Although my visits are primarily maintenance now, he’s always great at treating flare-ups of other, more acute issues—and he does so with an incredibly calm and kind demeanor.

I seriously cannot emphasize just how much of a difference that Chiropractor Tim Williams’ has made in my life for the better. Now I have been to my fair share of chiropractors over the last 15 years, since my accident. And without a doubt, Tim is, hands down, the BEST chiropractor I’ve had the blessing of finding. His approach is gentle, professional & precise 👌🏽. And his knowledge of the workings of the physical body is so VAST, it almost seems limitless. He thinks “outside the box” and has the most soothing bedside manner, which matches his extremely soothing voice (that is so relaxing, I liken his vocal range to the voices one would hear in guided meditation apps 😆). But my path to Tim started when I arrived in his care in dire straits (I’m talking- SO twisted up in pain with a very LOW degree of musculoskeletal flexibility 🥺). And after my first visit with him, I left his care, with two types of tears… tears of shame from realizing just how long I allowed my pain to take control over my life, but most importantly, I had tears of joy from the relief I felt & in knowing that the relief from pain was (& still is) only going to keep getting better with each visit with Tim. Now I know this is going to sound strange, but right after each adjustment that I receive from Tim, I experience this crazy physiological phenomena where it feels as if my “eyeballs are breathing” 😆! As strange as that sounds, I attribute this experience to the fact that the repairs that Tim is making within my body, from a chiropractic standpoint, are truly working & helping to connect & align all my bodily systems, back to a more flourishing state that which God created me to be in. With the goal of bringing me back to, or as close to, a state of homeostasis. I really can’t thank Tim Williams enough for what he does for me in my life. And this next sentence is aimed specifically to the person who is reading these reviews and trying to find and decide on which chiropractor to go with: If your on the fence in trying to pick a chiropractor in Portland, OR, I not only HIGHLY recommend Tim Williams, but coming from someone who, prior to landing in Tim’s office, was living a MISERABLE life in pain, I actually plead with you to give Tim Williams a chance! Because I don’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to at least explore the possibility of finding some relief from pain through Tim’s phenomenal chiropractic skills! And another thing to relay to you who is reading my review and has made it this far into it (😉), a common misconception of chiropractic care is that you go into see a chiropractor AFTER you’ve been injured.. but that’s the misconception! But from what I’ve learned is that you don’t have to (and maybe you don’t want to) actually wait to be in pain before receiving chiropractic care! But in fact, to gift your body with a better shot at withstanding future, physical offenses, it’s in one’s best interests to start chiropractic care now! Sure wish I knew this fact before my accident 🙈…. But this also means that it’s never too late to get in to see Tim Williams to either get relief from pain.. or to continue your physical wellness journey.

Dr. Tim is hands down the best chiropractor in the Portland metro area. I honestly can’t say enough about what a great doctor he is. He is friendly, caring and really knows his stuff! Most importantly he takes the time to really listen to you and find the root of the problem. I went in for some unresolved neck pain and he was the first doctor that was actually able to help!
