Functional Medicine

Useful information

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized, patient-centered approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease. Rather than treating symptoms alone, a functional medicine doctor looks at the interactions between genetics, environment, and lifestyle factors to understand each patient’s condition.

This approach involves detailed patient histories, advanced laboratory testing, and assessments to develop personalized treatment plans. Functional medicine aims to restore balance and improve overall health by promoting wellness and prevention through nutrition, exercise, stress management, and other holistic practices.

Our primary focus is on chiropractic care. While our practitioner is highly skilled in spinal decompression, mental wellness, muscle work, and functional medicine, these areas are integrated into our chiropractic sessions rather than offered separately. This holistic approach allows us to provide personalized treatments for each patient’s unique wellness needs.

Dr. Tim provided thorough care and insight that has me wishing I would have signed up for an appointment sooner! Without him and his insight, I am convinced I would still be managing chronic pain on the daily. He took the time to thoughtfully learn every detail of my pain and activity levels in order to create personalized exercises & workout plans that helped me stay active while maintaining an upwards trajectory on healing. I seriously cannot emphasize just how much of a difference that Chiropractor Tim Williams’ has made in my life for the better. Now I have been to my fair share of chiropractors over the last 15 years, since my accident. And without a doubt, Tim is, hands down, the BEST chiropractor I’ve had the blessing of finding. His approach is gentle, professional & precise 👌🏽. And his knowledge of the workings of the physical body is so VAST, it almost seems limitless. He thinks “outside the box” and has the most soothing bedside manner, which matches his extremely soothing voice (that is so relaxing, I liken his vocal range to the voices one would hear in guided meditation apps 😆). But my path to Tim started when I arrived in his care in dire straits (I’m talking- SO twisted up in pain with a very LOW degree of musculoskeletal flexibility 🥺). And after my first visit with him, I left his care, with two types of tears… tears of shame from realizing just how long I allowed my pain to take control over my life, but most importantly, I had tears of joy from the relief I felt & in knowing that the relief from pain was (& still is) only going to keep getting better with each visit with Tim. Now I know this is going to sound strange, but right after each adjustment that I receive from Tim, I experience this crazy physiological phenomena where it feels as if my “eyeballs are breathing” 😆! As strange as that sounds, I attribute this experience to the fact that the repairs that Tim is making within my body, from a chiropractic standpoint, are truly working & helping to connect & align all my bodily systems, back to a more flourishing state that which God created me to be in. With the goal of bringing me back to, or as close to, a state of homeostasis. I really can’t thank Tim Williams enough for what he does for me in my life. And this next sentence is aimed specifically to the person who is reading these reviews and trying to find and decide on which chiropractor to go with: If your on the fence in trying to pick a chiropractor in Portland, OR, I not only HIGHLY recommend Tim Williams, but coming from someone who, prior to landing in Tim’s office, was living a MISERABLE life in pain, I actually plead with you to give Tim Williams a chance! Because I don’t want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to at least explore the possibility of finding some relief from pain through Tim’s phenomenal chiropractic skills! And another thing to relay to you who is reading my review and has made it this far into it (😉), a common misconception of chiropractic care is that you go into see a chiropractor AFTER you’ve been injured.. but that’s the misconception! But from what I’ve learned is that you don’t have to (and maybe you don’t want to) actually wait to be in pain before receiving chiropractic care! But in fact, to gift your body with a better shot at withstanding future, physical offenses, it’s in one’s best interests to start chiropractic care now! Sure wish I knew this fact before my accident 🙈…. But this also means that it’s never too late to get in to see Tim Williams to either get relief from pain.. or to continue your physical wellness journey.

Dr. Tim is hands down the best chiropractor in the Portland metro area. I honestly can’t say enough about what a great doctor he is. He is friendly, caring and really knows his stuff! Most importantly he takes the time to really listen to you and find the root of the problem. I went in for some unresolved neck pain and he was the first doctor that was actually able to help!

Frequently asked questions about Functional Medicine

What is better integrative or functional medicine?

Whether integrative or functional medicine is better depends on your health needs and preferences.

Integrative Medicine:

  • Ideal for those seeking a combination of conventional treatments and complementary therapies (like acupuncture and yoga).
  • Focuses on overall wellness and preventive care.
  • Treats the whole person – mind, body, and spirit.

Functional Medicine:

  • Suited for individuals looking to address chronic conditions by identifying and treating root causes.
  • Involves comprehensive testing and personalized treatment plans.
  • Focuses on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors affecting health.

Both approaches offer valuable benefits, and the best choice depends on your specific health goals and the nature of your medical issues. Consulting with healthcare providers familiar with both approaches can help choose the most suitable option for you.

How to choose a functional medicine provider?

Here’s a simple guide on how to choose a functional practitioner:

  • Research Credentials. Look for providers with proper certifications and training in functional medicine. Check if they are affiliated with recognized institutions like the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).
  • Experience. Pick a provider with experience in treating your specific health concerns. Ask about their success stories and treatment approaches.
  • Approach to Care. Ensure they take a personalized approach, focusing on the root causes of health issues rather than just symptoms.
  • Communication. Select a provider who listens well, communicates clearly, and makes you feel comfortable.
Reviews and Referrals. Read patient reviews and ask for referrals.
  • Consultation. Schedule a preliminary consultation to discuss your health goals and see if their approach aligns well with your needs.

By following these simple steps, you can find a functional healthcare provider suited to your specific health needs.

What can I expect during a functional medicine consultation?

During a functional medicine consultation, you can expect an in-depth discussion about your medical history, current symptoms, diet, lifestyle habits, and environmental exposures. Your practitioner may order specialized laboratory tests to gather more information. Based on this holistic assessment, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to address your unique health needs.

What conditions can functional medicine help with?

Functional medicine can address a wide range of chronic health issues, including autoimmune disorders, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, metabolic issues, and chronic fatigue. By addressing root causes, it aims to improve overall health and prevent future disease.
